It located on the Brahmaputra River in the state of Assam.
This island is formed by the River Subansiri in the north and River Brahmaputra in the south.
It extends for a length of 80 km and 10-15 km north to south direction with a total area of about 875 Sq km and is 85 -- 90 m above the mean sea level.
Islets, locally called the Chaporis are formed due to braiding of the river.
Naghmar is the main village where various festivals like Raas Purnima, Paal Naam, Bathow puja are organized.
It is inspired from lord Krishna by Vaishnav Satras like Dakhinpat, Kamalabari, and Garamurh Satra.
Vernacular settlements house people from various ethnic origins like Mishings, Deori, Sonowal Kachari, Koch, Kaivartta and Nath.
Paddy, mustard, potato, pulses, sugarcane, wheat, and fruits are the main crops cultivated in the island.
About 100 different types of rice grow on this island, but Komal Saul is a unique type that reduces energy consumption among rice-eaters.
