Who are the

Chakmas & Hajongs?

The Chakmas and Hajongs are migrants from the Chittagong Hill Tracts of erstwhile East Pakistan, now Bangladesh

They were displaced by the construction of the Kaptai dam on the Karnaphuli River in the 1960s

In the aftermath of their displacement, they sought asylum in India

They were settled in relief camps in the southern and south-eastern parts of Arunachal Pradesh from 1964 to 1969

Presently, a majority of them reside in the Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh

Mizoram and Tripura have a significant population of the Buddhist Chakmas

The Hindu Hajongs primarily inhabit the Garo Hills of Meghalaya and adjoining areas of Assam

Both communities originally hail from the Chittagong Hill Tracts of what is now Bangladesh

They were forced to migrate due to the construction of a dam in their homeland in the 1960s

They were given refuge in India, particularly in the state of Arunachal Pradesh
