Description History of Red fort from construction to flag hoisting.

The Red Fort Complex was built as the palace fort of Shahjahanabad.

Shahjahanabad was the new capital of the fifth Mughal Emperor of India, Shah Jahan.

The construction, which started in 1638, took over 8 years to complete.

The structure was originally named Qila-i-Mubarak, which means ‘the Blessed Fort’.

In 1739 the Persian Ruler Nadir Shan invaded the city and plundered the fort of many valuable artifacts, including the Peacock Throne.

During the 1857 Revolt against the British, the marble structures of the fort were also destroyed.

The public trials of Indian National Army (INA) were held at the Red Fort in 1945.

Prime Minister Nehru hoisted the Indian flag over the Red Fort in 1947.
